Can I just say how cool it was that both of these superheroines’ personalities and powers were explored in this episode? And how well it was done?

Starfire was not shamed for being emotional. Her powers come from her emotions.

Raven was not shamed for suppressing her emotions. Her power requires amazing control.

They both. Work. They are both different kinds of strength, and they are both heroic and powerful and good. And they each learned from the other, and helped each other out by seeing from each others’ perspective, and finding the value in their differing approaches! Wow!

Fuck yes, this is how you write super-ladies, okay. There’s more than one way to be a “strong female character.” There’s all different kinds of strength. Why don’t more people GET this?

Whats Bugging You?

Well I know for me… my right elbow has been fudged up for the past week or so. I’ve gotten an x-ray, which came back inconclusive, so I went to another doctor to get it checked out, and turns out I’ve gotten something many tennis players get, hence the term “Tennis Elbow”, basically just a build up of calcium deposits… I think from my sword fighting/larping. Or maybe, hours upon hours of drawing / painting?

Axel Aozaru

My name is Axel Aozaru and I’m just your ordinary teenage boy. Well, maybe ordinary doesn’t describe my life. Many things happened to me when I was younger; I was born with a very unusual blood type which affected my life, I survived an explosion at a nearby warehouse, and last but not least I was kidnapped on my twelfth birthday. Man, my life has been one thing after another, but I’ll start at the very beginning.

I was born on December 31, XX20 on Azure Island, a man-made island created by my father’s company in celebration for my birth. You see, my father is the chief CEO of Polaris Tech, a company that builds machinery that makes life very convenient, there’s also a video game department within the company. Using his resources, he had the island constructed on a metal platform that generates its own power keeping it afloat on the ocean surface.

Anyway, when I was born, the doctors were able to determine my blood type, but found it very astonishing. I had an unknown blood type one not seen to mankind before, the doctors called the blood type “V,” for being the fifth blood type. Having a rare blood type, the doctors advised my parents to make sure nothing fatal was to happen to me, because if it did I’d be a goner. So for a good chunk of my life, I was sheltered within our house. It was only after a lot of nagging and the arrival of my cousin that my parents said I could venture out of our house and live life like a normal kid, or at least try.

I met my cousin when we were both 7 years old; although I find it hard to believe that he’s my cousin. He has blond hair when a lot of my family has hair on the darker hues, like black to dark shades of blues like mine, but my parents say he IS my cousin. He told me about the various martial arts that he’s mastered; I’m astonished that he’s mastered so many at such a young age. He also told me about his hometown, it sounds like a great place. He’s also very attentive to my every need, as if he were my butler or bodyguard.

Well, between the two of us, he would be the one that is cautious while I’m the one that is impulsive and curious, but can you blame me, I was locked in my own home until I was 7; never meeting people outside of the manor gates, just looking at the town from my room window wondering what it would be like. Now I don’t have to wonder because I can actually explore the town, but my curiosity also gets me in trouble because I don’t know much of the world. There was this one time when I took an apple from the store and started eating it, of course I got in trouble because no one knew who I was. The police got involved and so did my parents, the store owners forgave me and said that I was welcome to anything. Soon after that I was the headliner, the last Aozaru to finally surface in the social world. Of course, just appearing now also brought up the question of, “Why was he hidden until now?” My parents were bombarded by the media for weeks.

My life changed after that, my parents enrolled me into the local elementary school. It was a top class elementary school that taught both the rich and the poor, because my parents believe that everyone deserves the best education. My next trouble happened there; being the naïve little boy that I was I tried to fit in, unfortunately not with a very good crowd. This group was a bunch of pranksters, so one night I snuck out of the manor and met the kids at a warehouse down in the docks. The warehouse was filled with gunpowder and fireworks. One thing lead to another and a rocket was lit and sparked onto the gunpowder. The other kids ran off fearing they’d get caught because of the noise from the rocket. I was amazed to see the firework and didn’t notice the gunpowder beginning to ignite; by the time I noticed it was too late. The whole warehouse exploded damaging several other warehouses and boats.

The local authorities came by to subdue the fire and clear the rubble. As they were clearing the rubble they said that they saw a light cloaking me as if it were a protective barrier. The police also called my parents; they displayed both uneasiness and anger towards me. Let’s say that I was monitored 24/7 after that.

The years passed by and I had learned something about myself. I can’t explain it, but if I concentrate with all of my might on the tip of my finger, I can create a little ball of light. When I first discovered this ability, I was astonished and tried to do it again but I passed out. A problem I discovered about this ability is that it gives me a major headache and my nose starts bleeding. I can’t help but believe that this ability saved me during that night at the warehouse.

My twelfth birthday soon approached after the discovery of my ability. As usual, my parents had the party within the manor and they invited all of the citizens of Azure Island. Everyone was dressed so casually, but being a part of the Aozaru family, I had to dress formally especially since it was my birthday. There was knocking at my door, “Come in!” I said.

Leon entered the room, “Are you almost ready? Everyone’s waiting for you.”

“Yeah,” I replied. “Say Leon, what would you do if I leave?”

Leon looked at me with concern, “Leave? Do you mean going for a walk? If so, would you like me to accompany you?”

“No, I’m not going out for a walk. I meant if I leave the island? I want to explore the world like my older siblings. They got to see the world, even when they were my age.”

“I must admit that the world can lure in curious minds, but what would your parents say if they were to discover you missing?”

Heaving a sigh, “I know mom and dad do care for me very much. Okay, I’ll drop my thought of world exploration, but do I really have to wear the suit?”

“Your parents demand it and if I do say so myself, you look mighty impressive in the suit.”

“Fine,” I said as I put on the rest of my suit, “But know that I’m only doing this for them.”

Leon and I made our way from my room down to the main hall. We could hear the chatter of the guests being welcomed into our humble estate, the clinking of the glasses, and the smell of the honey-glazed ham was just to die for. We met up with my parents who were talking to a business man and a remarkably b-e-a-u-tiful girl with long fiery red hair with short twin tails on the sides of her head. She was about my height if not taller, and her eyes… they were a pearl-like pink that sparkled like the night sky.

“Axel, I’d like to introduce Mr. Seliph, owner and chief technician at Star Co.,” my father said.

I shook his hand to not seem a little unpleasant in meeting people, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, young master Aozaru.”

“Likewise.”

“Mr. Seliph specializes in genetics; right now he’s just completed his cloning experiment with great success.”

Chuckling Mr. Seliph replied, “Oh Aaron, you’re being too modest. Our project has only proven successful with inanimate objects; why all of the produce that we donated for tonight’s feast was all cloned. We’ve tried live cloning, but with no decent results.” The young girl coughed. “Oh my apologies, our success wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our young prodigy, Ayumi Takigawa.”

“H-h-h-hello, my name is Axel,” I said offering my hand to her.

Ayumi took my hand, “Greetings Axel, I’m Ayumi. I’ve read all about you; a child concealed until the age of seven. You made quite a stir when you surfaced in the world as well as surviving an explosion. Luck may be on your side.”

“Pardon sir,” Leon said to my dad. “It’s about time for the festivities to begin, yes?”

Laughing in agreement my father replied, “Yes, let’s eat; we can’t talk business on empty stomachs.”

Our party headed to our table and waited to be served. My father looked at my mother, “Where are the other children?”

“I’m afraid they’re all busy with their careers and couldn’t make it,” my mother replied.

“Go figure,” I muttered.

The festivities continued for hours, the people all enjoying themselves watching the fireworks and enjoying each other’s company. I waited on the terrace watching the fireworks and looking down at everyone in the garden.

“Is something wrong, young master Axel?”

I turned around to see it was Mr. Seliph who addressed me. “Oh no, nothing is bothering me.”

“Life is like each of these fireworks, starting as nothing, shooting up into the sky, displaying their talents, and then fading. It’s very sad when you think about it.”

“When you put it that way, then yeah, it is sad.”

“I remember a story my grandfather told me about an ancient civilization. You see that civilization was able to survive longer than any other because each member possessed a unique talent.”

“Is there a point to this story of yours Mr. Seliph?”

“Oh yes, there is; these unique talents could be called godly. There was a man who was one with fire; he was able to vanquish his foes in eternal flames. However with all that power eventually there was internal conflict which led to the destruction of the civilization.”

“What if some of them did survive?

“Well, then they would be considered outcast, but I would consider them as humans. After all, humans exist to evolve, to survive.”

“What would determine someone to have these said powers?”

“Well, I’ve heard that humans who possessed these powers have this strange mark somewhere on their body,” Mr. Seliph replied as he drew the insignia. “This symbol was referred to as ‘Cipher.’”

“Cipher?”

“Yes, the word cipher means code, or in this case, the code of D.N.A. Oh if only they were here in current times.”

I felt my right hand tingling and noticed that it started to glow so I hid it inside my suit pocket as quickly as I could. I thought it would be best if no one, not even my parents knew about my talent. “Thank you Mr. Seliph for your interesting story, but I need to be going I’m feeling mighty tired.”

“I’m glad I could keep you company. I’m glad to have met you today and happy birthday.” he replied as he held out his right hand.

I was nervous to bring out my hand, but then felt the tingling sensation leave my hand. I reached for his hand and replied, “Thank you for coming to my party.” I left the terrace to return to my room when I saw Leon heading towards me.

“Is something wrong cousin Axel?”

“No, I’m just going to sleep; all of this commotion has wiped me out.”

“Okay, well sweet dreams.”

I headed back towards my room; the hallway was dark because the guests were told that places with the light off were off limits. It was slightly creepy; walking down a dark hallway with the moonlight shining through the large glass windows. I started hearing the sounds you would hear when one walks down a long hallway. Unfortunately for me, those sounds were very real and that was the last thing I remember…
